Flooding is a recurring natural disaster in Malaysia, particularly during the monsoon season, causing significant
damage to property, infrastructure, and human lives. One of the major challenges in flood management is the lack of
real-time monitoring systems that can provide early warnings to communities at risk. Traditional flood detection
methods are often slow, manual, and inefficient, resulting in delayed responses and increased vulnerability.
Therefore, this study aims to develop a Smart IoT Flood Monitoring System that can detect rising water levels and
deliver immediate alerts to users.
The primary objectives of this project are to monitor water levels in real time, provide an early warning system, and
enable remote monitoring through mobile applications. The system utilizes a NodeMCU (ESP8266) microcontroller
integrated with a float sensor to detect changes in water levels. Data collected from the sensor is transmitted via Wi-
Fi to the Blynk IoT platform, where users can observe real-time updates through a mobile application. Additionally,
a buzzer is incorporated to provide an immediate audible alert when the water reaches a critical level.
The methodology involves designing and assembling the hardware components, programming the microcontroller,
and integrating the system with the IoT platform for real-time data visualization and notification. The novelty of this
project lies in its low-cost, user-friendly, and easily deployable design, making it suitable for widespread use in
flood-prone areas, especially in rural communities.
This innovation contributes to improving disaster preparedness by providing timely alerts and enhancing decision-
making during emergencies. Furthermore, it aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, by
strengthening resilience against climate-related hazards. Overall, the Smart IoT Flood Monitoring System offers a
practical and effective solution to minimize the impact of floods and protect communities.
