SafeStride is a GPS-based emergency safety system designed to improve the safety of hikers, runners, and outdoor activity users. The project was developed to address the problem of delayed assistance when individuals experience emergencies such as getting lost, becoming injured, or being unable to communicate their exact location. In outdoor environments, especially unfamiliar or remote areas, identifying a person’s location quickly is important to reduce response time and increase the chance of receiving help.

The SafeStride prototype uses an ESP32 microcontroller, GPS module, SOS button, Wi-Fi connection, and Telegram notification system. When the SOS button is pressed, the system reads the user’s GPS coordinates and sends an emergency message containing a Google Maps location link to a selected contact. This allows family members, teachers, guardians, or rescuers to locate the user more accurately and respond faster during emergencies.

This project applies STEM knowledge through GPS satellite positioning, Internet of Things (IoT), electronic circuit design, microcontroller programming, and coordinate-based location tracking. As the project is developed by students from the Accounting Programme, it also integrates non-STEM knowledge through cost estimation, budgeting, pricing strategy, and commercialization planning. This makes SafeStride not only a technological innovation, but also a product with potential market value.

SafeStride supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Future improvements include GSM communication to reduce Wi-Fi dependency, LED visibility alerts, hydration reminders, and fall detection. Overall, SafeStride demonstrates how affordable technology can support outdoor safety and emergency response.
