Food waste and food insecurity remain significant challenges in many communities. While large amounts of edible food are discarded daily, vulnerable groups such as low-income families, orphanages, shelters, and elderly care homes often struggle to obtain sufficient food supplies. HungerSense AI is an innovative smart food rescue system designed to bridge this gap through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), mobile technology, and community collaboration. The system enables food donors, including households, restaurants, supermarkets, and event organizers, to upload information about surplus food through a user-friendly mobile application. Using AI-powered image recognition developed with Teachable Machine, HungerSense AI can automatically identify, classify, and record donated food items from photographs. This reduces manual data entry, improves accuracy, and accelerates the food matching process. A key innovation of HungerSense AI is its Predictive Food Need Alert System. By analysing historical food requests, stock availability, and consumption patterns, the platform can predict potential food shortages before they occur. When a community home or welfare organization is projected to experience a shortage, the system automatically generates alerts and notifies nearby donors and volunteers, enabling proactive intervention and preventing supply disruptions. To further improve efficiency, HungerSense AI incorporates a Smart Volunteer Delivery Network. Volunteers receive optimized collection and delivery assignments based on location and urgency, ensuring that surplus food reaches recipients quickly while minimizing transportation time and resource wastage. The proposed solution offers multiple benefits, including reducing food waste, improving food accessibility, strengthening community engagement, and enhancing resource management through data-driven decision-making. The system is scalable and can be expanded to support schools, universities, local councils, and non-governmental organizations, creating a sustainable ecosystem for food redistribution. HungerSense AI aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. By combining AI technology with social innovation, HungerSense AI provides a practical, sustainable, and impactful solution that transforms surplus food into a valuable resource for communities in need.
