Nutri-Calm is a student-led STEM innovation that introduces a natural chewable sweet prototype designed to support children’s tummy comfort and improve learning readiness during school mornings. The idea was developed after observing that some young learners arrive at school without breakfast, which may affect their comfort, focus, mood and participation in classroom activities. Instead of presenting a medical product, Nutri-Calm is designed as an educational food-based prototype that combines science, natural ingredients and child-friendly product design.
The prototype uses carrot and beetroot extract for natural colour and plant-based nutrients, honey for natural sweetness, ginger for a refreshing aroma, and agar-agar as a setting agent to form a soft chewable texture. The project applies the chemistry concept of pH balance through a safe simulated acidity experiment using food-grade acidic solution and pH paper. The test showed a visible colour shift from an acidic condition toward a more balanced pH range after the Nutri-Calm mixture was added, demonstrating the scientific idea behind the innovation.
Nutri-Calm also supports Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being by promoting awareness of children’s wellness, healthy school routines and natural product innovation. The project integrates Science through pH testing, Technology through product design and digital presentation, Engineering through formulation and moulding, and Mathematics through measurement, ratio, data recording and graph interpretation. Nutri-Calm proves that small ideas, when guided by STEM thinking, can create meaningful solutions for healthier and happier learning environments.
