In today’s market, many soaps used by children and families contain synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances that may irritate sensitive skin. At the same time, Malaysia is rich in natural plant resources with proven benefits for health and skincare. This project introduces MargoBetel Magic, a herbal soap developed by primary school students as part of STEM innovation.
The soap is made using natural ingredients such as neem oil, betel leaf extract, aloe vera gel, goat milk soap base, and lemongrass essential oil. Neem oil and betel leaf are known for their antibacterial properties, aloe vera soothes and moisturizes the skin, while goat milk provides a gentle cleansing base suitable for sensitive users. Lemongrass oil adds a natural, refreshing fragrance.
Beyond product development, this project emphasizes hands-on science learning. Students engaged in simple experimental processes such as extracting plant materials, measuring ingredients, mixing formulations, and observing outcomes. The soap-making method was designed to be low-cost, safe, and easily replicable in classroom or small workshop settings.
User feedback will be collected from teachers and students to evaluate the soap’s effectiveness, usability, scent, and skin compatibility. This evaluation helps students understand basic product testing and improvement processes.
More importantly, this innovation goes beyond creating a product. It serves as a platform to promote STEM learning, environmental awareness, and entrepreneurial thinking among young learners. By utilizing locally available plants, the project also highlights Malaysia’s natural heritage and its potential for sustainable product development.
MargoBetel Magic demonstrates how simple, student-led innovations can integrate science education, health awareness, and community empowerment, while inspiring future small-scale entrepreneurship.
