Road traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of death among children and adolescents worldwide, with school zones representing particularly vulnerable environments. In Malaysia, road crashes are consistently among the top three causes of death for individuals aged 10–19 years, while an average of 67 fatalities occur annually in school zones, and 322 crashes involving injuries and fatalities were reported in these areas in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced pedestrian protection measures. In response to this challenge, iSafePath was developed as an Intelligent IoT-Based Smart Safety Crosswalk System that integrates vehicle detection sensors, programmable LED displays, high-visibility warning lights, and audible alerts into a unified automated safety platform. The system continuously monitors approaching vehicles and provides real-time communication between pedestrians and motorists by displaying "Please Wait" when vehicles are detected and "Please Cross" when it is safe to cross, thereby improving situational awareness and reducing the likelihood of pedestrian-vehicle collisions. A functional prototype was successfully designed, developed, and demonstrated in a school environment to evaluate its operational performance and practical feasibility. The innovation offers a cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable solution capable of enhancing pedestrian confidence, promoting responsible driving behaviour, and strengthening road safety in high-risk locations. Unlike conventional zebra crossings that rely solely on driver awareness and pedestrian judgement, iSafePath introduces an intelligent decision-support mechanism that actively assists both road users through real-time interactive safety communication. Beyond school zones, the system possesses significant commercialization potential for deployment in hospitals, residential neighbourhoods, industrial areas, university campuses, recreational parks, and other public spaces through strategic collaboration with local authorities and government agencies. Furthermore, iSafePath directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities) by leveraging affordable smart technology to create safer, more inclusive, and resilient urban mobility solutions.
