SS271: Calm Breather

Nabiha Binti Zaidi Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lutong

Introduction

Panic attacks are sudden episodes of fear that make people breathe too fast, feel dizzy, and lose control. They are frightening and can happen anytime. Many people don’t have immediate support when this occurs. Calm Breather is a mobile app built on Base44 that helps users calm down by guiding them through slow breathing exercises.

Problem Statement

When someone is panicking, they often can’t manage multiple steps. That’s why I designed my app to respond instantly with one button. For extra support, it also has an advanced feature that listens for distress word like help and automatically starts the calming sequence without the user needing to press anything. There is a need for a simple, fast, and responsive tool that can provide immediate relief.

Objectives

1. To design an app that gives instant support during panic attacks.

2. To guide users through slow, rhythmic breathing using visual and audio cues.

3. To add smart detection so the app can respond automatically to distress signals like distress word “HELP”.

4. To provide a simple, fast, and responsive tool that offers immediate relief when someone feels afraid.

Implementation

The app was created using Base44 with help from Base44 AI for coding guidance and debugging.

  • Interface: A large red emergency button, a blue breathing circle, and short calming text instructions.
  • Logic: When the button is pressed, the app hides the red button, starts a timer, and plays a soothing audio track. The circle expands for inhaling and shrinks for exhaling in a repeating cycle.
  • Advanced Feature: The microphone listens for distress word help. If triggered, the app automatically starts the calming sequence and changes the screen color to blue for reassurance.

Results

Testing showed that the breathing cycle and calming voice helped slow down fast breathing and reduce stress. The microphone feature made the app more responsive, starting the calming process without needing a button press.

Conclusion

Calm Breather is a simple but powerful app that supports people during panic attacks. This project reflects the theme of Next Gen Innovation, Empowering and Strengthening the Quality of Life, because it provides immediate support, improves mental wellbeing, and demonstrates how students can use AI tools to create solutions that make life better. The app is fast, empathetic, and easy to use, making it a valuable companion for anyone who feels afraid during a panic attack.
