Fruit peel waste, amounting to approximately 1.3 million metric tonnes daily in Malaysia, contributes to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions due to inefficient disposal. This study addresses this pressing environmental challenge while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals by introducing Fruity. This novel solution transforms fruit peel waste into biodegradable bioplastic products such as straws and spoons. For instance, to create bioplastics from orange peels, firstly, the ingredients needed are mixed with the right ratio. Then, the mixture is cooked and moulded into the shapes wanted. Finally, it is dried for about 2 hours by using the machine. As for the impacts, Fruity’s innovative approach reduces fruit waste, lessens landfill burden, mitigates greenhouse gas emissions, and helps combat plastic pollution, ultimately protecting marine life. Not only that, a dedicated app is also being developed to facilitate fruit peel collection and distribution by collaborating with restaurants, supermarkets, and vendors. The app also supports product sales and incentivizes contributors through cashback. These efforts highlight the potential for scalable, zero-waste solutions contributing to a circular economy. In conclusion, Fruity can significantly impact Malaysia's environmental sustainability and waste management, fostering a healthier ecosystem and promoting a more sustainable future.
