PS415: CRANKY CAN CRUSHER
NEOH YOU XI SJKC MIN SIN
Project Description – Cranky Can Crusher
The Cranky Can Crusher is an innovative project developed by Team Think3vate to provide a safer and more efficient solution for recycling aluminum cans. At our school, the janitor, Pak Abu, is responsible for collecting and crushing empty cans. To save space, he usually steps on them, but this method is unsafe and has caused him injuries, such as twisting his ankle. Our project was inspired by the need to improve his working conditions and promote sustainable recycling practices.
The design uses a hand-crank mechanism connected to gears and a lead screw, which drives the crushing panel to flatten cans consistently and safely. Once crushed, the cans drop directly into a recycle bin placed underneath, reducing handling effort. The device is fully mechanical and does not require electricity, making it environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
The development process began with research and idea sketching, followed by 3D modeling using CoCreate software. The design was exported into STL files, sliced, and then 3D printed. After assembling all the printed components, the prototype was tested and refined for better performance.
Key features of the Cranky Can Crusher include:
• A detachable multi-can holder that can handle up to 10 cans at once.
• A five-layer filtering system to remove leftover liquids or food from cans before crushing.
• A safety lid that prevents accidents during operation.
This project not only solves a real-life problem faced by our school janitor but also demonstrates how engineering and innovation can support recycling efforts. By making can crushing safer and more efficient, the Cranky Can Crusher contributes to sustainability and improves everyday life.
